Hidden Figures is the SIFT subtest in which a square pattern of crossing lines hides one of five figures, and you pick which one.

The subtest

Measures

The subtest measures the ability to rapidly pick out a figure inside a larger, complex pattern.

Format

The subtest has 50 items in 5 minutes. Its length is fixed, not adaptive.

Few test-takers reach the last item.

Scoring

Each wrong answer costs part of a point; an unanswered item costs nothing.

The SIFT reports one score from 20 to 80. The subtest has no score of its own.

Item types

One pattern, five figures

The pattern is a square filled with crossing lines. Five figures sit below it, and one of them is hidden in the pattern; you pick it.

The hidden figure has the same size and orientation as its answer: never turned, scaled or stretched.

  • The hidden figure outlined

    Training runs 50 items on the same 5-minute clock as Test mode. After each pick or skip, the hidden figure is outlined on the pattern, and the clock stops until you press Next.

  • The real format

    Test mode runs 50 items in 5 minutes, one at a time with no going back; Skip leaves an item unanswered, and a wrong answer costs a quarter point. The same five figures sit under every pattern of a session and come first in one unscored sample item, off the clock. Every session draws from a pool of 5,040 items in three tiers of camouflage.

  • Ranked against other test-takers

    Each score is ranked against the scores of other test-takers. The Statistics page plots the ranking of every attempt, so you see whether you are beating more test-takers than before.
