What to Expect on ASVAB Test Day

First time taking the ASVAB? Here's everything you need to know before you walk in.

    Format & Duration

Most enlistees take the CAT-ASVAB (computerized) at MEPS. It has 145 questions across 9 subtests and takes about 2.5 hours. Questions adapt to your ability level: get one right and the next is harder, get one wrong and it's easier.

    What to Bring

Your recruiter will tell you what documents to bring (usually a valid photo ID). No calculators, phones, smartwatches, or personal items are allowed in the testing room. Scratch paper and pencils are provided.

    Scoring

Your AFQT score (percentile from 1-99) determines if you can enlist. It's calculated from 4 subtests: AR, MK, WK, and PC. Line scores (composites of different subtests) determine which jobs you qualify for.

    Tips for Test Day

Get a full night's sleep. Eat a good breakfast. Don't rush. Use all the time available. On the CAT, answer every question (unanswered questions hurt your score more than wrong answers). Trust your preparation.
